Eoin Colfer (2014-2016)

Eoin Colfer was born in Wexford in 1965. Having qualified as a primary school teacher, he worked in Wexford before travelling and working in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. His first book, Benny and Omar, was published in 1998, based on his experiences in Tunisia; it has since been translated into many languages. A sequel followed in 1999. He attained worldwide recognition in 2001, when the first Artemis Fowl book was published and became a New York Times Best Seller, as did some sequels. Among his other popular works are Half Moon Investigations, The Wish List, The Supernaturalist, and a series of Eoin Colfer’s Legends. In January 2008, Colfer published a book titled Airman, another best-seller. His novel, W.A.R.P: The Reluctant Assassin was nominated for the CBI Book of the Year in 2014 and Imaginary Fred, his first picturebook, which he produced with Oliver Jeffers, won the Bord Gáis Energy Book of the Year in 2015. To date more than half of his books have reached the New York Times list at least once.

During his term as Laureate na nÓg, Eoin inaugurated a nationwide storytelling tour called Once upon a Place, which focused on the link between story and place. He also edited an anthology, of the same title, of short stories and poetry on the theme of magical places in Ireland.

One of Eoin’s most exciting projects is Seanachaí, a storytelling project taking place as part of the 1916 commemorations. While Eoin’s Once upon a Place programme saw a group of storytellers travelling around Ireland bringing their own stories to audiences of children throughout the country, Seanachaí is designed to pass on the art of storytelling to the children themselves. You can read more about Seanachaí here.

Rugadh Eoin Colfer i Loch Garman i 1965.  Tar éis dó cáilíocht a bhaint amach mar mhúinteoir bunscoile, d’oibrigh sé i Loch Garman sula ndeachaigh sé ag obair san Araib Shádach, sa Túinéis agus san Iodáil.  Foilsíodh a chéad leabhar, Benny and Omar, i 1998, bunaithe ar a sheal sa Túinéis; tá sé aistrithe go mórán teangacha eile ó shin.  Lean an dara leabhar é sin i 1999.  Bhain sé cáil dhomhanda amach in 2001 nuair a foilsíodh an chéad Artemis Fowl.  Bhí sé ar an Liosta is Mó Díol ag an New York Times, agus ba amhlaidh le roinnt de na leabhair a tháinig ina dhiaidh sin.  I measc a shaothair iomráitigh tá Half Moon Investigations, The Wish List, The Supernaturalist, agus sraith d’fhinscéalta Eoin Colfer.  In Eanáir 2008, d’fhoilsigh Colfer leabhar dar teideal Airman, leabhar móréilimh eile. Ainmníodh a úrscéal, W.A.R.P: The Reluctant Assassin do Ghradam Leabhar na Bliana CBI in 2014 agus bhuaigh Imaginary Fred, a chéad phictiúrleabhar, a rinne sé i gcomhar le Oliver Jeffers, Leabhar na Bliana Bord Gáis Energy in 2015. Go dtí seo, tá áit bainte amach ag níos mó ná leath dá chuid leabhar ar liosta an New York Times uair amháin ar a laghad.

Le linn a théarma mar Laureate na nÓg, chuir Eoin tús le camchuairt náisiúnta seanchais, Once upon a Place, a dhírigh ar an nasc idir scéal agus áit.  Rinne sé eagarthóireacht freisin ar dhíolaim, den teideal céanna, de ghearrscéalta agus filíocht ar théama na n-áiteanna draíochtúla in Éirinn.

Is é Seanachaí ceann de na tograí is spreagúla atá ag Eoin.  Is tionscadal seanchais é a bheidh ar bun le linn chomóradh 1916.  Leis an gclár Once upon a Place, chuaigh grúpaí seanchaithe ar camchuairt ar fud na hÉireann agus iad ag tabhairt a gcuid scéalta chuig páistí ar fud na tíre.  Ach, tá sé mar aidhm ag Seanachaí an ealaín a bhaineann leis an seanchas a thabhairt ar láimh do na páistí iad féin.  Is féidir tuilleadh eolais a fháil faoi Seanachaí anseo.
